Washington, D.C., USA - 6 June - 9 June 2012

A long flight from Seattle with a connection in Minneapolis had me arriving after dark in the District Capital. I had to walk something like 20 blocks at around midnight, so was a little apprehensive as to whether I was safe or not, but it was an uneventful walk where I relaxed after a few blocks when I saw two girls all dressed up and seemingly on their way to a nightclub.

Seattle, USA - 4 June - 6 June 2012

I am just doing a very quick one about Seattle because I was only there a couple days and didn’t really get up to much exciting stuff. The weather was miserable when I was there, and unfortunately I heard that they only get something like 50 days a year of sunshine. The big attraction is of course the Space Needle.

I did plenty of walking around town, and saw the harbour,

San Francisco, USA - 29 May - 4 June 2012

San Francisco, the highlight of my USA trip, is an amazing place. I stayed here an entire week, and I think it was the perfect amount of time to really get to know the place and see what it has to offer. So, in a nutshell, what makes this place special? Is it the great seafood straight from the bay? Is it the awesome hilly landscape that makes the city unique? Is it the tourist sites to see the amazing Golden Gate Bridge, or Alcatraz? Is it the proximity to USA’s wine region, or amazing national parks? Is it the way people there are so relaxed, laid back, and give off a good vibe?

Las Vegas and The Grand Canyon, USA - 27 May - 29 May 2012

Flying from New Orleans to Vegas connecting via Los Angeles, I arrived in the famous town. Walking past a score of pokies in the airport, I went to the shuttle desk to try organise a shuttle bus to the Sin City Hostel where I intended to stay. “Ah’ve never heard of thayt place, sorry hun,” was the reply. I jumped on the free wifi and had a look what the nearest hotel was, and said “Oh sorry, can I take a shuttle to the end of the strip then.” I was soon on my way, with a bit of a walk once I arrived at the end of The Strip which is basically a strip of casinos.

New Orleans, USA – 23 May – 27 May 2012

I caught a plane from San Jose, Costa Rica and flew to New Orleans. Let me start off by saying that I loved this place, and wish I had stayed longer. Now most of you I’m sure will remember back in 2005 there was hurricane Katrina that caused plenty of damage to say the least. My first thoughts when I walked around the town was that they had done a great job of rebuilding and making it look like it never happened, but you can still see the scars in certain areas. Most notably is that the place feels under-populated.

La Fortuna, Costa Rica - 19 May - 21 May 2012

We drove down to the bottom of Monteverde and took a ferry across a little lake to another main road, and then bussed it to nearby La Fortuna.

La Fortuna is known for its volcano - Arenal Volcano - and great activities similar to that you can find in Montverde, but different enough to make seeing both a treat. They also offer white water rafting, but I didn't go as they were apparently having a bit of a dry spell and the rapids wouldn't be that good.

Monteverde, Costa Rica - 17 May - 19 May 2012

Monteverde translates from Spanish into Green Mountain, and is rightly named so. There is plenty of jungle and water around. It’s a bit of a touristy place, with lots of tourist bars, hotels, and activities. However, it’s not that easy to get to – the locals don’t allow any paved road to be built to get there. This is purely so that the place doesn’t become so mainstream that it’s overrun by tourists.

Nicaragua – 13 May – 17 May 2012

We overnighted on the way from Roatan Island in Comayagua, and the next day arrived in Granada. The town has a great Spanish feel to it, with some great cafes and restaurants.

Roatan Island, Honduras – 9 May – 12 May 2012

A super long travel day from Copan, leaving at the crack of dawn and arriving after sunset, had us arriving on the beautiful island of Roatan. Roatan is known for its amazing coral reefs and decent beaches. And when I say amazing, boy do I certainly mean that. I honestly think it’s the best place in the world to go snorkelling and diving. There are many diving businesses ready to take you out to the best spots. If you’re not comfortable being 10m underwater with a tank strapped to your back, then you will still find the snorkelling simply marvellous.

Copan, Honduras – 7 May 2012 – 9 May 2012

After a whole day in the bus from Antigua, we arrived in Copan. It was a fairly scenic drive through the highlands, but coupled with a hot border crossing, and a hot bus, we were glad to arrive and take a cold shower. I remember not doing much that night; I was tired from two late night, early mornings in Antigua. The next day we walked down the road from where we were staying to the Copan Archaeological Ruins. Copan is a small town, mostly visited for the ruins and for the nearby hot springs. On the walk down, there were a few ruins on the side of the road such as this. Pretty cool!
