August 2011

Athens, Greece - 7 August - 8 August 2011

So after boarding the overnight ferry we pretty much just relaxed, played some cards, had a beer, and went to bed early. The next day we touched down on the west side of Greece and made our way across to Athens. We stopped on the way at the Corinth Canal which connects the sea on the left and right side of Greece and is used for shipping as it cuts down travel time a lot.

Pompei and Mt Vesuvius - 6 August 2011

It was up at 5.30am the next day for the drive down to Pompei, and needless to say everyone was hung over and hadn't had much sleep so therefore felt terrible. But we had an awesome treat on the way to Pompei, something that no Contiki tour had ever done. We drove up the famous Mount Vesuvius! It was a narrow windy road all the way up and the bus had to make 3 point turns a few times just to get round certain corners, but it was definitely worth it.

Rome, Italy - 4 August - 6 August 2011

We arrived in Rome at around 2pm, jumped off the bus and went straight into the Vatican and did a pretty cool guided tour. First point of interest was this cool court yard with a big pine cone and a big sphere.

Florence, Italy - 2 August - 4 August 2011

On our way to Florence we stopped at the leaning tower of Pisa. It was pretty impressive, and I was surprised to find some other big buildings right next to it - a great looking cathedral and a baptistry. Here's all the buildings in one picture.

Venice, Italy - 31 July - 2 August 2011

Italy, Italy, Italy. What a wonderful country, full of surprises at every turn. And the food! I think I put on about 5 kg in the week we were here. The best pizza and pasta of my life! Italy has it's downsides too though. Italian people's driving is pretty shocking, although not the worst I've seen. And when we got down to southern Italy it got pretty dodgy because it's all run by the Mafia. More on that another time though. But otherwise, they have a great culture of loud people that wave their arms around every time they say something.

The French Riviera - 29 July - 31 July 2011

Back in wonderful France! Spain was really nice,  but I prefer the French people and their more sophisticated tastes. We drove back into France and down to what is known as the French Riviera which is basically the southern coast of France. On the way there we stopped in a very old Roman town called Arles where Vincent Van Gough lived for some years doing some of his famous works. Below is a pic in Arles of an ampitheatre on the left and some 800 year old buildings on the right.

The Chateau and Barcelona 25 July - 29 July

So before I begin I guess now is a good time to tell you about the Contiki Tour. I'm doing the European Adventurer which is a 37 day "concept" tour which means that it's not camping, but pretty close since it's a lot of hostels and share cabins. Although there is a few hotels too :) As I am writing this I'm sitting in a tin cabin near Venice and it's hot and there's plenty of mosquitoes, and I'm drinking a warm Danish beer. But life couldn't  be better!
