The Rhine Valley, Germany – 24 August – 25 August 2011

After Switzerland we were back into Germany travelling up toward The Netherlands. On the way we stopped in a city called Heidelburg. It was pretty cool, it's a student town since the university there is arguably the best in Germany. The main road had all sorts of interesting stores like a Christmas tree store and a Gummi-bear store. I bought some they were very gummi yummy.

Switzerland – 22 August – 24 August 2011

On the way to Switzerland we had a couple of stops. The first was in the tiny country of Lichtenstein. There's not much to say about Lichtenstein except that they manufacture the skins for sausages, and if you want to hide your money from other governments and authorities just put it in a bank there. The scenery wasn't very noteworthy, I didn't even bother taking a photo. We did have lunch near the royal family's 12th century castle though.

Munich, Germany – 21 August – 22 August 2011

Munich is a practical city, not too much touristy stuff going on except in the town centre there's a glockenspiel (clock tower), Hofbrauhaus (a famous beer centre), and a cool park with a standing wave. Of course there's the Oktoberfest which attracts many Germans, and many foreigners, but that is a story that will come later! We spent our afternoon in Munich walking around, the standing wave was created by the fast – moving river going over a suitably sized submerged object which let surfers get their boards and surf for as long as they can manage.

Hopfgarten, Austria – 19 August – 21 August 2011

We had a pretty good trip from Vienna to Hopfgarten. Our first stop was the Schwarovsky Crystal museum which was more of an exhibition of cool stuff and art than a museum. There was this giant crystal:

Vienna, Austria – 17 August – 19 August 2011

Our first night in Vienna we went into town to see an Orchestra playing classics by Mozart and a couple other composers. It was really good, no photos unfortunately, but it's something I had never seen before and it was a real treat. Most people there were old which is fair enough as I guess the youth of Austria don't particularly care for such things?

Slovenia – 15 August – 17 August 2011

We drove for the day from Dubrovnik up towards Zadar, Croatia. We passed through Bosnia, but it was a blink and you'll miss it kind of thing – we didn't even stop there. We arrived in Zadar in the afternoon and walked around the city for a little while. It was a pretty decent city, although I was just recently spoiled by Dubrovnik, but it did have the same old feel to it that let you know there was history everywhere around you.

Dubrovnik, Croatia – 13 August – 15 August 2011

Let's start by saying that Croatia is amazing. Now I'm sure you can see the picture above this, and what you are looking at is a view from the range of mountains along the coastline, looking down at the city of Dubrovnik.

Preveza, Albania, and Montenegro – 11 August – 13 August 2011

In my previous post about Mykonos which I hope you have read, I said that we had only a couple hours sleep before waking up, going to Greece mainland (a very quick 2 hour boat ride), and jumping back on our coach. It was really weird to be back on our old coach after not being on it for about 4 days. We were headed for Albania, but it was too far to drive in one day so we stopped off in a city called Preveza.

Mykonos Island, Greece – 8 August – 11 August 2011

Oh what a beautiful island! I could easily live here for 6 months, or however long their summer is which is probably longer than that. It's really hot there, but you don't really feel it too much because of the literally gale-force winds that batter the island 24 hours a day. Apparently if the wind stops then everything stops because it's just too hot to do anything with temperatures above 40 degrees. We didn't have to suffer through that thank goodness!
